Be it for purely scientific reasons or just to play secret messages with your loved ones, BinaryCrypt is an excellent open-source utility to transform any ASCII text into binary, decimal, or hexadecimal code, among many other code and base combinations. As all combinations can be easily reversed to text when required, you can use this tool to encrypt and decrypt your most sensitive information. As a bonus, the program comes with a binary calculator.
BinaryCrypt couldn’t be more straightforward. The program’s interface – which could benefit from a revamping of, at least, the conversion options window – comes with a split window and a list of set combinations. The top box is where you input or paste an ASCII string or file (be it text or, for instance, a binary or decimal combination of characters), while the bottom box is reserved for the resulting conversion. Below that split box you will find a list with nearly all possible combinations and two buttons – one to open the binary calculator and another one to open a very similar (thus confusing) window where you can reverse to text, decimal, etc., any previously converted string of characters. To go back to the previous window you’ll need to click on the “Convert from Text” button.
I wouldn’t say that this efficient and free utility is difficult to use, but the clear usefulness of the algorithms working in the background would greatly benefit from a more intuitive and less confusing interface. Its limited, yet useful, functionality can surely be arranged in a much simpler and attractive way. Other than this, if you need or simply enjoy converting text into various bases and systems backwards and forwards, consider downloading and trying this one.
